The 5th Edition of the world’s most comprehensive operative hand surgery reference pairs the tradition of print with the advances of technology in a continuously updated multimedia (E)dition. A new team of international contributors, carefully selected for their particular expertise and ability to offer broad perspectives in a given subject area, describes a complete range of open and arthroscopic techniques. They discuss their preferred surgical methods • patient selection • pre-operative evaluation • decision making • expected outcomes • and special instrumentation. A companion CD-ROM enables readers to link directly from bibliographical citations to corresponding MEDLINE abstracts and other sources. The Fifth Edition of this classic text remains true to its original spirit, and adds a wealth of current knowledge to keep readers on the forefront of the discipline. Greater emphasis has been placed on the handling of bone specimens, both biopsy and larger specimens, and on the grading and staging of neoplasms -- the most essential aspect of proper treatment for bone tumors. In previous editions benign and malignant neoplasms were discussed separately; in this edition they are discussed on the basis of differentiation. An abundance of all-new illustrations enhances and reinforces study, with increased focus on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Although emphasis is still placed on diagnoses which are based on histologic sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin, the results of immunoperoxidase studies are now incorporated when they are considered important.
